LABYRINT

LABYRINTH

I walked into the labyrinth, blood in my eyes,
a raging bull. Already I had lost the thread.
Is there a colder, harder knife than love’s regret?
Is there a lower deep than hating butterflies?

A deep fall from my black Zeppelin, carved out of pride
and soaring, seething arrogance, skimmed through the sky,
crystal clear and sharply drawn,  steered by a desire
for frosty order. ‘It is good’, Mondriaan cried.

I had to follow after you, retrace the track,
then turn left. Away your image and beauties flew.
I lost urgency, broke a brittle bridge I crossed

in two. Then I doubled up, slowing down like glue,
unmoving and unmoved, a snail whose shell got lost.
I turned the corner and was watching my own back.

Sampo

Sampo

I searched, but could not name the object of my quest:
it was too widely known and too much all around.
I searched in ancient Greece, I went from east to west,
then stayed in Finland where the weight bears people down.

An old hag whispered incantations in my ear,
sang songs about a grail I could not understand;
meanwhile I heard a choir of dun snowfoxes scream
about futility and a black dawn at hand.

I hurried on across a glacier. Then, snowblind,
the primal egg appeared where icefields branched away:
such perfect beauty till it broke and bore its child,

the fairest female ever seen, without a cry.
She took my hand and cut into the frozen clay;
I sank down in the sea, looked straight in Sampo’s eye.

Het Narrenschip

I

The Ship of Fools

I

The ship of fools left port and I was on it.
Beside the nun, fool, banker and pimp I could
blow the horn of plenty. All this was as good
as it got, I bowed my swollen head a bit

to freely stuff myself and booze even more,
ridiculing the poor, their hollow glances,
poking fun at the thieves, who take no chances
with right or wrong, eating coins all they look for.

The ship of fools left port, I was on the quay
to see the voracious singing binging cast
on the seething seas, jellyfish and snakes

in the wake of the vessel of doom, and flakes
of phlegm from disgusted sages up the mast,
and hoping no one would be bothered by me.

Het Narrenschip

II

The Ship of Fools

II

You contemplated suicide, death seemed near
when, saved by a fax, you swapped dying for food
and talking, as you had so often previewed
your life would be on the ship of fools. Now hear

Paul McCartney crooning to your sons who sleep,
and Jacqueline’s highbrow whispers in your ear.
Feel the choir of hands of those that hold you dear,
lovers who sing of your grace as something cheap.

Your ship is fuelled by the prose you command,
it broke your Irish anchors loose from dry land,
and you sang of the cold welcome without end

that awaited you, you sang of those who lied.
The ports of call, you took them all in your stride,
your love is still out at sea, around the bend.

(for Edna O’Brien)

Het Narrenschip

III

The Ship of Fools

III

To this bottom you can never say goodbye.
Port and sea are one, an undivided home,
no seams or welds, like a print in monochrome
that cannot satisfy the desirous eye.

Your brother’s a clown. Here his bauble lays claim
to his learning and powers of persuasion.
Your wife’s a nun. Rising to the occasion,
she rebooks you to this journey without aim.

Signed up for the race to the elusive cape
that compulsively strikes all fools off the rolls,
deprived of their worldly pleasures, a yawn wells

up in memory of wines with richer smells.
As we cannot leave this place, we sleep agape:
the painter will take pains to scrape off our souls.

Hebzucht

C. Gijsen

Greed

You were six, you had to give everything a name.
This pocket-sized usurper, this Alexander
the not-so-great, had become the world’s commander.
You changed the house rules, achieved everlasting fame

and won high praise when you biked or only chattered.
You pointed and things were yours. Easy. Your twaddling
conquered with plain logic, the sound of your toddling
small feet on the floor meant all restraint was shattered.

You claimed what was yours by right! That much was clear.
You thought you had the usufructuary rights
to what you saw and touched due to your tender years.

You offered pardons to those who came at your call.
Then things tangled up and you were in for a sight:
you looked around and found yourself hated by all.

Hoogmoed

C. Gijsen

Pride

You lived among cowards and low foreheads: a star,
only sixteen. Your words, though, were of no avail:
not lost, but falling flat. And following the trail
of leaders and great minds, your voice came from afar

when you dictated your holy gospel to birds
in trees, like a St Francis with an attitude.
Speaking became preaching, saluting was eschewed,
a chore for soldiers. Only isolation girds.

No one was beside you, the crowds stayed put below.
Your self-willed height made delirious, you would go
up radiantly past tops of cheap happiness,

whorishly hugged by lowlifes. How could they not know
how futile their existence was, its emptiness?
But they were out of earshot, you were on your own.

Luiheid

Sloth

At twenty-six you cruised in life’s slowest lane,
trapped in the luxury in which you wallowed,
there for the taking. And time went by, days followed
days to watch your hollow charade of disdain.

Hours were for sale, you knew, in large supply,
as rare as drops in the sea, a timeless feel.
And days turned into weeks, spokes in your life’s wheel:
useless abacus that gave no reason why.

Speeding things up? There were no reasons for it.
before your abandoned eyes the world unfurled
in rhythms that made you lean its way a bit,

but never pushed you forward or off your feet.
In your lethargic night crawl past bars and girls
you only stumbled across yourself, dead-beat.

Toorn
‘Hoe kan jij praten, zeggen wat jij ervan vindt?’;

Wrath

At thirty-six, your maturity still remote,
you looked back into your forward child’s cocky face.
‘What gives you the right to speak, being so out of place?’
A silent shout rose scorchingly inside your throat.

Self-begotten life flew at your throat, uncontrolled,
and squeezed some more. Your rage served the urge to survive
only. Moving lobster-like, you would not arrive
anywhere soon, caught in this leaden stranglehold.

Was it your fault? Others had put you in this fix.
Had cut short your breath. Striking was your only choice.
Reproaches left you unaffected like pin-pricks

on a porcupine. Criticism tasted flat.
You were a god. No one was to ignore your voice.
You left, kicking the children’s bike, startling the cat.
