Lijsten

Ik zag Eco en hij had een lijst gemaakt
In een boek van lijsten: hij wilde de dood
Dol draaien, verwarren, sarren, misschien staakt
Hij dan zijn lauwe slachtwerk en ademnood

Zolang je de rijen nog kunt verlengen
Blijf je de lijfeigene van het leefspel
Alles beter dan de blik te verengen
En dom te buigen voor de ultieme bel

Ik zag de wijze nar, de lach op de mond
Bestorven, hij liet in zijn bibliotheek
Ruimte: mijn gedicht liefdevol bijgezet

In het pantheon van de gewezen bond
Tussen woordenbronnen en dichter, ik keek
Zoel naar de voetnoot¹ van mijn vliedend verzet

Lists

I saw Umberto, he had made a list:
A book of lists of lists to bully Death,
To mix Him up so much He might desist
From slaughtering us to take our daily breath.

As long as you leave room on lists for more,
The game of life will claim your life as well,
So don’t reduce your scope to either/or,
Don’t throw the towel before the final bell.

I saw the wise old fool, a dying smile
Upon his lips, his library in style
Had room. My verse was lovingly interred

To rest there in that temple, where the word
Once bonded with the bard. Then I made bold
To write a fleeting footnote¹ of revolt.
