Venetiƫ was nog ver weg, maar ik schreef
Er, vroegoud, toch over, dus was ik er al
Het ging over schoonheid, aangevreten, scheef
Hangend in het verloop van water en wal
Ik verhaalde van romantiek, Britse bard
En de erotiek van verschoten kleuren,
Zag in de Lolita's courtisanes, hard
Liegend snoof ik zwijmelend aan lijkgeuren
De lagune trok mij later binnengaats,
Ik was ouder, niet wijzer, vond mijn woorden
Terug op pleinen, bruggen, kerken, geen plaats
Was veilig voor mijn jeugdkoortsen, monogaam
Beleed ik mijn geloof aan wie mij hoorden:
Dat de dood al vroeg woonde in mijn lichaam

Venice was still far away, but I’d been therealready, old before my time, in my prose.It dealt with eroding Beauty, her slanting poseat the meeting point of water, land and air.It told tales of romance, of the English Bard,the eroticism of colours fading.Lolitas seemed like courtesans parading.I swooned sniffing the death smells. My lies were hard.Later, the lagoon made me sail back to port,- older, not wiser -, to find my leitmotifback in squares, churches, on bridges: no resorthad been spared the fevers of my youth. My breathI spent preaching my monogamous belief:from birth, my body had only hosted Death.
